Auguste Rodin is widely recognised to have transformed modern sculpture by breaking from classical ideals and focusing on raw emotion and the human form. He was one of the first modern artists to become a true international celebrity during his lifetime, and his fame was carefully cultivated through a combination of controversy, strategic exhibitions, government commissions, and media coverage. Portraiture, in the form of print material such as postcards as displayed here, contributed to his public image and was commonly signed as gifts to friends and acquaintances.
